Situated atop a ridgeline with commanding views of Waimea Inlet, this residence is strategically designed to optimize solar exposure throughout the day while maintaining uninterrupted panoramic sightlines.
The architectural composition integrates both interior and exterior environments through carefully planned spatial transitions. Verandas, outdoor living areas, and a pool courtyard are positioned to reinforce visual connectivity, ensuring a harmonious interaction between the built structure and its surrounding landscape.
Material selection is driven by both functional and aesthetic considerations. Shuttered precast concrete provides structural integrity while visually grounding the building within its site context. Complementing this, dark-stained cedar cladding serves a dual purpose—its subdued tonality allows it to recede into the natural backdrop, while its organic texture enhances the residence’s overall material synergy with its environment.
Collingwood
Nestled within a densely populated area of Nelson, this refined, vertically oriented residence exemplifies the seamless integration of architectural elegance with structural precision. Designed to optimize spatial efficiency within a constrained footprint, the three-story home incorporates a swimming pool while addressing significant geotechnical challenges to ensure site stability and mitigate potential impacts on adjacent structures.
The project demanded a high level of coordination between structural and architectural disciplines. Key engineering solutions include strategically placed retaining walls to reinforce the site, steel framing for enhanced bracing capacity, Structural design allowing advanced waterproofing techniques to be implemented. The open-plan design promotes fluid spatial connectivity, while the application of meticulously detailed origami cladding harmonizes the built form with its surroundings.
This residence stands as a testament to innovative structural engineering and architectural synergy, delivering a sophisticated living environment that maximizes natural light, panoramic views, and urban privacy within a complex site.
